So what exactly is a tech writer?

A tech writer writes instructions. With a plethora of software products, web applications, mobile apps, websites, etc. launching everyday, someone needs to explain how they all work in layman's terms. That's where tech writers come in.

The type of work you do varies based on the subject matter, product, and who your audience is.

For example, you could be writing on-screen text for a popular mobile app, specifications for the latest laptop, help center content for an advertising platform, etc. The list goes on and on...

Of course, there's more to being a tech writer than writing help center articles, specifications, training materials, etc. You also develop the best content strategy for your audience, when they need it, so that it is useful and drives action.

What you do as a tech writer plays a critical part in someone's experience when they read your text on their favorite app, website, or software product. Cool, right?

Consistency

You get to work on projects for a minimum of 3-6 months. Grow your skills, develop a portfolio of work, and get paid consistently.

Pays well

Starting salary for tech writers is around $70,000. That's with less than 5 years of experience even for contract roles.

It's cool!

As a tech writer, you get to play a key role in crafting the experience for users and customers of apps, websites, etc.

WORRIED THAT YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT SKILLS?

Creating technical content, especially content that is easy to understand and interesting, is not always easy. Don't worry though, these are skills that you can learn. This is not just a "watch and think about it" type of training.

Showing that you can create technical content is a MUST in the Tech industry.

In module 1, I share a 5-step process that I've used for the past 5 years and what industry trainers and instructors use to create content for top Tech corporations and startups.

  • You will actually select a "real-life" product (app or website) to write about

  • Together, we’ll determine who your target audience is and how you can help them

  • You will write instructions!

  • We'll walk through a typical review process

  • You will publish this content to your portfolio!

You’ll walk away with a portfolio that makes recruiters, clients, and hiring managers drool over what you can bring to the table. This is only module 1 though, there more...

YOU ARE SMART ENOUGH!

Before you scroll on, I want you to know that you don't need to be a genius to be a tech writer. You don't even need to have a Journalism, Communications, or English degree!

Listen, I don't have either of those degrees and have been enjoying my tech writing career for the past 6 years.

Your focus is on making complex products (web/mobile apps, websites, hardware, etc.) easy to use and understand.

This is where focusing on your audience needs come in.

This is where creating content to help others kick in.

This is where you tap into the resources that are available to you in this course come in.

concerned about not fitting in with the "tech geeks?"

As a tech writer, you're rarely on your own writing in the corner of a coffee shop somewhere. Don't fret though, it's actually a good thing that you get to work with very smart and influential people. In module 5, you'll learn:

  • Common terms and methodologies used in the Tech industry
  • Who you are likely to collaborate with on a regular basis
  • Tips on how to communicate effectively with your engineers, designers, product managers, etc.

As your course instructor, I give you PRACTICAL insights on how to navigate the tech scene as a writer. Keep in mind, that I have over 10 years of experience working in Tech and also worked in Silicon Valley for 1 year.

+ What kind of experience do I need to complete the course?

No prior experience is required and chances are you've had to write something for a project or previous job. Contrary to popular belief, no technical or coding language knowledge required either.

In this course, you will get to practice your writing skills and build your portfolio. The course is designed to help you learn job-ready skills for in-demand roles such as technical writer, content strategist, UX writer, etc. If you've had prior writing experience then that is a plus!

+ Will this course teach me how to write?

This course walks you through the process of creating technical content and how you can use your writing skills to land a tech writing job opportunity. It does not cover grammar details such as when to use "affect" vs "effect," what a prounoun is, or other in-depth grammar lessons.

+ How much time do I need to complete the course?

I recommend roughly 2-4 hours a week depending on the module. My recommendation is to take 1 month to go through the tech writing and portfolio creation sections of the course. Review and practice, practice, practice! Then, take another month to go through the job-readiness section of the course. It takes time and creativity to transfer your currnet skills over to a tech writing role. You'll also need time to fine tune your job-search strategy so you can apply for new roles with confidence.

However, you can go at your own pace with this course as you have access to the materials whenever you need it.

You can take as much as a week to complete each module if you like. Don't worry, you're never behind. What we cover in the class can help you before getting a tech writing job and even with your current role. These are very valuable skills to have!

+ How long will it take me to get a job after I complete the course?

There is no guarantee that you will get a job after taking this course. Some students who have taken the course have landed jobs within 4 months and up to 1 year after taking the course. It all depends on your level of effort and the quality of work you produce. Take a look at the testimonials sprinkled throughout the page above and on the course page here to get a more realistic insight.

+ Do I need to have a technical background to land a tech writing job?

No, you do not. Most tech writers do not have a technical background. It's a commmon misconception, but you do not need specialize knowledge in a software or app to become a tech writer. I encourage you to learn as much as you can about how to analyze users, practice tech writing, and create a writing portfolio which is exactly what you'll do in this course.

+ Will I get a job once I take the course?

I can't guarantee that you will get a job, but everything I share in this program is exactly what I and other students have successfully used over the past 5 years to land really cool tech writing opportunities including roles with Google, Microsoft, Best Buy, Salesforce, etc.

I can almost guarantee that if you follow the steps in this course, you will learn something new and at the very least, hear from a recruiter.

Whether you get a job or not, don't underestimate the power of knowing how to strategically search and apply for high-paying roles in this job market, how to create a portfolio that showcases your skills, and how to leverage your tech writing skills in almost any role!

+ Can I really learn enough in this course to get a job ?

The best thing you can do is implement what you learn in this course and go for it. These skills and strategies are designed to help you learn the fundamentals of creating technical content and jumpstart a successful tech writing career even if you don't have prior experience.

The goal is to get you to build a solid real-world portfolio and use specific strategies to increase your chances of getting an entry-level role in technical writing, content strategy, instructional design, UX writing, or related opportunity.

Dare I say that the information you learn in this course can also be applied to other areas in your professional career as well.

+ I've been looking at other online programs and college courses that costs thousands of dollars, why is this course so affordable?

Ha! You know what, tech writing is not a well-known career path so I want to make the entry point as accessible and affordable as possible.

I've put together a formula that has worked well for myself and other students over the years. I want you to experience similar resuls so I created this course to help others succeed. And quite frankly, I can't take advantage of all of the job opportunities that come across my inbox; someone else like you should be joining me!
